how to transfer files from dead laptop's hdd to new pc

The old pc just ran [against my wishes] an update to 8.1 from 8. The next day it fell and was destroyed. How can I salvage the programs from the old drive? I have a goflex usb>sata connection available, and the new pc is running "8.1 with Bing" [and I'd like to kill Bing on the new one as well].

Salvaging data from a fully working hard drive is relatively easy

Salvaging installed programs is often very difficult or impossible unless the install files are on the hard drive and can be identified and copied off
