Going with an AMD CPU for gaming is never good, especially if it isn't at least a FX 8XXX series, but yeah, tight budget... Although I believe Intel would offer a better upgrade path - an i3 CPU or a G3258 overclock to 4.4 GHz could do similarly well and would be a great transition into an i5.

real world numbers have shown me that the fx-6300 is plenty good enough for a budget build. it's not going to give $1000 performance but neither is an i3 or pentium. i dislike the pentium/i3 as a dual core. it just seems like a bad idea to go dual core when we are slowly moving away form them and there are other options. i know you will say "but benchmarks show...." but this is exactly what i will say about the 6300. benchmarks show it performs fine on new games as well as old just like the i3 does. :)

i admit i am biased against the dual cores. but hey, the op can go whichever way he chooses. i only offer an option as you do and see which he likes :D no hard feelings either way.

The i3 is essentially a quad core because of the multi threading if you are worried about that. I own a FX 6300 and I am not too impressed. It's just that Intel provides a better upgrade pathway. I am sorry if I have offended you somehow, I was just trying to give my feedback. Plus I am bored so I kind of need some sort of a discussion :D

oh lord no, i am not offended at all. we each have an opinion and that opinion and $1.50 will get you a dr pepper :) the idea is to offer options and reasons and let the op make an informed decision. so far he has 2 different opinions and reasons for them. believe me i understand the intel arguments but i like mine better :p at the higher end it is intel all the way for me right now but on the lower end i still like the fx series even if it is a dead socket. i'm just not ready to let it go yet.....

i love a good discussion as it teaches me things and at times offers a new view i did not consider. :D
