Can anyone assist me in installing the nVidia GeForce GT 540M drivers for my laptop on linux. I can't seem to install them without completely destroying X Server. At this point I actually can't even drop to shell cause my display straight up doesn't work so I have to ssh in to do stuff. I made a backup before hand because I know their drivers are extremely poor when it comes to linux but any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I guess I'll just re-install and restore.

1. What Linux distribution are you using?

2. Are you using the open-source driver or the closed-source one from NVidia?

3. How exactly are you installing the driver?

4. Do the X Server log messages give you any hints?

I know their drivers are extremely poor when it comes to linux
That is completely wrong. The NVidia Linux drivers are extremely good.

Really because the AMD drivers are as easy as they are on windows. Just as a point of reference every single time I install the nVidia linux drivers I break my installation. I'm currently on Linux Mint but I've broken Ubuntu as well. I have never had a successful install. Anyway the distro is Linux Mint and it's the proprietary driver. I'm installing it with the .run from geforce.com and I haven't looked so I'll do that as soon as I get my laptop working again.

Yes I'm going to be using bumblebee but I still need drivers and that's my problem. I actually already have bumblebee installed and some older drivers thanks to the mint driver manager but I'm trying to update them to the latest and that's my problem.
