how do you mean caddy?
and i do not have the appropriate cables for that

A caddy is something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GIDNLI6/ which lets you connect bare hard drives via usb to your computer.

If you have a desktop with some sata cables, just plug in the hard drive and use it as you would a removable drive - copy the data from it and then switch off the pc and take out the hard drive.

Formatting does remove the files - maybe use some data recovery software to recover files as it appears that your hard drive may be corrupted.
