Why do H97 boards have XMP?

I am waiting on my Asrock H97 pro4 to come in the mail. As an h97, the chipset limits memory speed, (but not latency?) to 1600mhz. As 1600 is the standard default unless XMP is enabled (as I understand it, this is my first build), why does the asrock website say this board has XMP, while also saying that faster memory will be reduced to 1600? Am I missing something?

Solution
Generally the mobo defaults to 1333, XMP allows for the easy setup of 1600 sticks (simply enable XMP rather than manually set timings and freq)

Ok thank you both. I bought G Skill 1866 CL8 before doing much research into it, plus I was going with a 15 4690k/ asus z97-a before my budget forced me down to 15 4590/ asrock h97 pro4. If I use this memory (which isn't on the mobos approved list, but similar gskill memory at 1600 cl9 is), I will need to use XMP to hit 1600 correct?

Ok thanks. I would have reasoned this out myself if the Asrock mobo page had added the little suffix "(OC)" after the 1600mhz entry of supported memory speeds, which other speeds on other boards do.
