Memory Expansion Card Questions

I think my motherboard has a short in one of the second set of memory DIMM sockets. It's an old socket 939 board and I was looking for the cheapest possible solution to add extra memory. I plan to upgrade my PC in a few months and my current system will end up as a backup so I don't want to invest much.
I was curious about some of the PCI based memory boards/cards. I had some questions and I was hoping that someone familiar with them could answer. Do the cards have to use the same type of memory as the motherboard (DDR, pins, etc.)? Could I use varying pairs of capacity strips on the card (ex.- two 256mb strips and two 1gb strips)?

Thanks...John

PCI RAM was talked about a while back, but never really caught on.

The current PCI memory cards are SSD's for system storage to avoid the SATA bottleneck that the fastest SSD's can get limited by.

It will be painful to run Win 7 with only 1 GB of RAM, but you are kind of stuck until you can get a new system. You can try adding a fast USB flash drive configured as ReadyBoost, but it will only help a little.
