my phone is some yers old noe, and it have Android version 4.0.4. and ofcourse isn't it getting updates any more.
so i am planning to root it, so can i use every Android version i want? will it run all smooth?

Solution
Rooting doesn't mean you can run any android version you want. Rooting allows higher level access to the system folder and files but has nothing to do with the version of Android.

The only way to run a different versions, is if someone made a version for your particular phone. Only the most popular phones get a custom version of android, so unless it's a really popular model, you're out of luck.

Your best bet is to look on XDA-forums and see.

thanks you so much, i found my phone, but this site is all new to me.
so when it says example: Recognized Contributor. its not some guy from India, who lives in a dark celler trying to give me malware?

NO, XDA is a recongized site. What phone do you have?

"Recognized Contributor" on XDA means that the user has build and contributed a certain amount of content on the XDA website. It could be custom ROM's, kernels, tools, apps etc. It could be a guy from India, he could live in a dark cellar but the chances are highly unlikely that they are doing anything mischievous. XDA is full of professionals and enthusiasts. I've installed many ROM's from users there and even contributed one. Most people publish all their work on sites like github for everyone to see and use.

As getochkn asked, what phone is it?

I disagree with the notion that you need a really popular phone, I have an LG C800 (MyTouch Q in the USA), and there's CyanogenMod 9 for it. It's not a particularly popular phone, it really depends on how easy it is to work with X device. My phone happens to ship with an unlocked bootloader, newer phones do not.

So you have 1 phone that has a 3 year old ROM. that doesn't really mean anything. Even with an unlocked bootloader, dev for your phone stopped at ICS, no JB, no KK, no LP.

Let me rephrase then. 99% of the newer ROM's on XDA are for the popular phones.

True, because this phone is way too slow to run anything newer than ICS, but CM9 is still a massive jump from the LG Gingerbread ROM. I only have 386MB of RAM and a single core CPU.
