Unable to connect via Ethernet after having installed an SSD

Long story short (long story can be provided if necessary!) Windows failed to boot on my PC's hard drive around 3 months ago. I finally got around to buying an SSD, loading Windows onto that and booting via the SSD so I now have a working computer and can access all my files on my HD. However, I require an ethernet cable in order to use internet effectively on my PC, and having plugged it in and expecting it to work automatically, it has not.
Having followed a load of links, and none of them working, i.e. trying to download the Ethernet controller drivers, I attempted to Network Adapter Driver for Windows 7 and got the message ''cannot install drivers. no intel(R) adapters are present.''
I am now stuck, what do I do?

Thank you very much for any help!

Pick your OS, select LAN and download the latest Realtek drivers. That's why the intel drivers didn't work, you don't have an intel network card.
