Looking to buy an SSD, wondering about capacity.

I am sick and tired of my computer taking 10 minutes to start up and am seriously considering buying an SSD. SSD's are becoming cheaper but I still don't know about the relationship between SSD and HDD.

I am willing to invest 100$ into a 250gb SSD if it would be worth having all of my files on the SSD and using the 500gb HHD I have now as a back up storage, loading everything from my SSD.

I come to the community here asking this: Should I just invest in a small capacity SSD and just load windows from the SSD, or can I just benefit from just having a 250gb SSD and using my 500gb HHD as a sort of "External hard drive."

Yes.
That is exactly how most people, myself included, have it configured.

This question is all I need answered, now:

"Can I use my HDD as a storage drive to store files, instead of booting applications and WIN 7, and have applications and WIN 7 boot from the SSD?"
