Which power supply should I get: Evga SuperNova 850 G2 or Corsair HX850i?

Hello!

I'm building a new PC for myself primarily for gaming and 2 power supplies have caught my attention. The Evga SuperNova 850 G2 and Corsair HX850i. I personally love the design and look of the HX850i but I do realize that it's not the most important thing when choosing a PSU. I also like the flat cables of the HX850i, are they better than the ones that the G2 is equipped with?

Would I be fine with buying either? Because If so, I would rather have the HX850i.

Evga SuperNova 850 G2

Summary

Buy one. Do I really need to say anything else at this point? Once again, EVGA has something awesome here the competition can't seem to touch price wise. Performance? There are better units, yes. Not very many, but they exist. The real story here is how EVGA keeps managing to offer this kind of performance and still be more affordable than nearly everything else out there, and they have pretty much found perhaps the only OEM on Earth capable of doing it for them. It's got to be real nice being EVGA right now.

The Good:

outstanding ripple suppression
excellent voltage regulation
fully modular...

semi-fanless mode
nice blacked out cabling

The Bad:

nothing at all

The Mediocre:

reviewing awesome units is getting dull... where's that gutless wonder in my pile? Second in line? Well, at least I'm guaranteed something interesting in all the wrong ways in a couple weeks...

Thanks for the link! I actually looked into his HXi review aswell and it was given a 9.6, taking points off only for "value". Really not sure which one I should get, can you provide insight on the cabling for both? HXi cables are flat whereas the G2 has sort of.... sleeved cables? I don't know but I'm assuming that flat might be easier for those with tight spaces?

Yeah I agree - I have two of the G2 units and they're very solidly built PSUs, plus EVGA even has sleeved cables available on their website. The HXi models are decent and are Channel Well made, but they're not the superior Flextronics units that the AXi series are known for. If you're going to go for Corsair, get the AXi series, not the HXi.

HX850i
• Allows you to choose between multi +12V-rail or single-rail mode (through Corsair Link).
• Higher AC-to-DC conversion efficiency.
• Digital interface allows you to monitor the PSU's functionality through the Corsair Link software
• Quieter.

The HXI units are very solid units, but the AXi units have better build quality. The Corsair Link software is kind of useless from the reviews I've read.

Which one would you pick out of SuperNOVA G2 and AX860i then?

What exactly does it have that the G2 or HX850i doesn't? I want to be sure I'll actually need/use it before I decide on one. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but is the AX860i latest or the HX850i?

The AX860i is a fully digital PSU that uses Digital Signal Processors (DSP) to monitor and regulate the voltages. It results in much tighter voltage regulation. This is considered very expensive technology so the PSU is priced higher.

The EVGA SuperNOVA G2 850W and Corsair HX850i both use analog voltage regulation.

The AX860i was released in November 2012 and use Flextronics as the OEM. The HX850i was released in June 2014 and use CWT (i.e. Channel Well Technology) as the OEM.

The AXi Series is Corsair's top level series followed by the AX Series and then the HXi Series.

I understand. I know Blackbird mentioned that the flat cables that come with the HX850i feel cheap, would you say the same or would you consider flat ones more convenient and better compared to the sleeved ones on the G2?

Flat cables are stiffer and not as easy to work with.

EVGA's modular cables use individual wires that are bundled into a braided sleeve that results in a more flexible cable.

I don't know how often you "feel" the cables. I just install them once and don't worry about them again until I upgrade the graphics card or add a new SSD or HDD.

Hmm. I think I might go with EVGA then. It got a 9.9 on jonnyguru, has better cables, and is quite cheaper than HX850i and AX860i. I'm thinking of using custom cables now though, for the PSU (different colors and such).

Both Corsair and EVGA sell individually sleeved modular cable kits for those PSUs.

Yes I looked around on their website and found some custom kits but none of them really have multi-colored cables. I'm looking for something like black, white, and grey. Do you know any website that has it? I'm looking but haven't found any yet.

You could also get them direct from EVGA as well: http://www.evga.com/Products/ProductList.aspx?type=10&family=Power+Supplies&chipset=+Power+Supply+Cable+Set+%28Individually+Sleeved%29

The OP already looked at those.

EVGA doesn't have any cable sets that have all three desired colors in each modular cable.

EVGA has been notorious for releasing solid coolers on their cards. Sure, they aren't using custom PCBs, but they are usually at the top in terms of performance, overclocking and cooling. Some are a bit late to the game and might outperform, but I always go with EVGA given their track record with GPUs.

The EVGA 980TI SC with ACX2.0 is outperforming the Titan X: http://www.fudzilla.com/reviews/37974-evga-geforce-gtx-980-ti-superclocked-acx-2-0-backplate-6gb-previewed

Fan speeds are based on usage which is nice keeping things quiet.
