Need help getting stable CPU temps for i5 4690k overclock

i'm currently overclocking my i5 4690k (first time OC'er), and while i can boot into Windows fine, my temps are hitting the limit when running OCCT. the last 2 times i've tried to run it, it's automatically stopped itself, both times after about 15 seconds. it gave me the message that Core #0 had went over its temp limit, which is why it stopped.

my question is, do higher temps mean dial back the voltage, or dial back the multiplier? i'm currently at 4.4GHz and 1.235V. and i'm running on a Corsair H100i cooler, so even though it's not top of the line, it's good enough to handle a reasonable OC.

any suggestions for how i can modify this to get better temps under load?

1.235V for 4.4 certainly doesn't seem over the top - I would have expected something closer to 1.3V if not over. Are you OCing through BIOS or software? Do you have an offset set, or is it on auto? What are your actual peak core temps at idle and load?

I would take a hard look at your CPU cooler mounting, CPU fan settings, and case cooling setup. Are all of your fans maxed out when you're benchmarking? It's possible the overheating is a factor of case and CPU cooling rather than CPU settings.

Also, is your BIOS current?

1. i'm OC'ing through the BIOS
2. i don't know what having an offset means. how do i do that?
3. my core temps at idle are around 35-40C. under load, Core #0 hit something like 86 at one point during OCCT, so OCCT stopped itself. the second time, it hit 96C and it stopped itself. i think the cutoff mark in OCCT is 85C.
4. i have all my case fans and CPU cooler fans running at max speed.
5. i have the current BIOS according to the Gigabyte website and my system info

i also just loaded up Smite (i know it's not the most intensive video game, but yeah), with Real Temp open in my other monitor. i messed around fighting fire giants and stuff, and my core temps stayed around 57-62C.

i checked offset voltage, and it's set to auto. it's also grayed out, and i don't see a way to change it.

i've lowered the voltage to 1.228V now, and everything still loads up fine. idle temps are similar to before, maybe 1C less on average.

just tried to run OCCT again, and it quit after about 5 seconds. temps shot up immediately.

Have you checked the cooling tubes going from cpu to the radiator? Both should be warm. Something is faulty either with the cooler or the way it's mounted/installed. That cooler should perform at least as well if not a bit better than most air coolers under load. What is the temp in the room where the pc is located? Those voltages sound normal for that oc and 4.4 isn't a major overclock (meaning it's not pushing the cpu to it's complete limits). I'm able to keep my temps around 70-75c max on an air cooler during intel burn test and prime95 26.6 small fft's. While gaming it only hits around 60-65 even when I have a heater on near my pc. Those temps should be much lower.

i just took off my heat sink, cleaned off all the stock thermal paste (yeah, i used the stock Corsair paste that came pre-applied, shame on me), cleaned off my CPU, applied some Arctic Silver on the CPU in a vertical line like it's suggested for Haswell i5, and screwed everything back on extra tight.

i haven't ran any stress tests yet because i'm still trying to get my new monitor set up that just arrived, but my idle temps are already 8-9 degrees lower across the board. so that's a start.

i'll run a stress test again soon and update with results.

my settings for OCCT are:

test type: infinite
duration: 1 hour
idle periods: 1min at beginning, 5 min at end
test version: 64 bits
test mode: large data set
number of threads: 8 (the automatic box next to it is checked)
and it says "this test will use 1792MB of memory. i have 16gb at 2400

and it's set to stop if any cores go above 85C.

basically, all of those are default settings. i haven't changed anything because i've never used this and don't know what to change. any suggestions before i try again?

i'm running the Linpack test for my temps right now, with the settings based on that guy's suggestions. i'm a few minutes into it and so far temps are between 60-65 max.

i honestly never would have thought to redo my heatsink/thermal paste, so thanks a bunch for that. obviously i'm not in the clear yet, but so far this is looking infinity better. temps are still not going higher than 65C across all cores during this OCCT test.

Awesome! Come back and post your final results when you hit your OC ceiling - to get the next 200-300MHz, you may need to jump your voltage more than you have to this point, but with an H100i and your current vcore and temps it's looking promising.
