Memory useage question

first, my build

Asus Z97M-Plus MB
i7-4790 (locked) cpu
G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1600Mhz, 16 GB, (2X8)
Samsung 840 EVO SSDs 250 GB (2x)
samsung 810 SSD 256 GB, old, used as a "worktable" drive for video
4 tb Western HDD Green
Asus GTX Geforce 750 Ti graphics card, 2 gb

I do a lot of video rendering.

i just added the graphics card, but even before the graphics card, i've never seen memory usage go above 5.98 GB - i monitored it out of curiousity, both in task manager and using the intel XTU (Extreme Tuning utility), and it's usually at 3.9 - 4.4 GB. Even when i run stress tests, whether Prime95 or XTU (stress and benchmarking tests), it's rare to see memory usage go above 4.8 GB

why did i buy 16 GBs if it's using, at max, 6 gb of memory. Probably better to ask, why isn't it using the resources i bothered to purchase & install?

just curious about this, as i've had no problems with anything, other than an initial overheating issue with the cpu that's been cleared.

tks in advance

Solution
Simple, you bought 16GB cause somewhere along the line you were told or thought it would be better to have 16GB of RAM.

Fact is, almost never will you use more than 8GB of RAM. I did basically the same, so don't feel bad, but I have monitored for 2 years now in games and many other situations, only twice has it exceeded 8GB. Thats it.

Basically the other 8GB is wasted for almost anything you do, so have fun :D

Yea when I upgraded I went from a single-core system from 2003 with 2GB of RAM, and sprang for 16GB too. Mostly cuase I had 4 RAM slots and it would bug me to death to leave them empty, so I got a 4x4GB kit to save cost. I originally wanted to get 32GB too, but I'm really glad I didn't now. It would of been a complete waste. I can operate as a mini-server and still not need that extra RAM.
