PC freezes after startup, GPU suspected

Hi! I've been using my computer (which I assembled by myself) for 1.5 years for now and today when I was playing Minecraft the whole computer suddenly froze. Mouse and keyboard didn't respond, only option was reboot. But right after startup and login (Windows 7 Home Premium) it happened again. It happen every time about 10-60 sec after startup. I haven't overclocked it or anything.

I actually erased the whole hard disk and reinstalled Windows, but the problem still remains. So I tried another graphics card which worked normally. So that is why I suspect my GPU. What is weird, everything works fine in safe mode (maybe because it doesn't use graphics acceleration). I also checked the GPU's capacitors to make sure they aren't broken. Everything LOOKS fine in harware but obviously something is NOT fine.

So, what causes the problem and is it possible to fix? Buying new one costs too much for me right now :(

And specs:
GPU: Powercolor HD7850 PCS+ 2GB
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0
PSU: XFX 550W
CPU: Amd FX-8320 8-core

Thank's in advance and I apologize my (bad) english. Feel free to ask if I forgot something :)

make sure with hdtune that the hard drive is fine. a bad controller will hand your pc too. on your gpu try a gpu ram tester program see if your gpu has bad ram. with some gpu they have lifetime warranies some have 3 or more. go to the gpu vendor web page put the gpu serial number is see if it still under warranty.

What is the differences between the 2 video cards? If one draws a lot more power than the other, the PSU could possibly be suspect. Power supplies a lot of times get weaker as they get older (even though 1.5 years really isn't that old).

The difference is huge. The older one is 20 years old i guess :D So can I reduce the performance of the Powercolor GPU so I can find out if the PSU is responsible? Maybe using Catalyst Control Service but as you know, I cannot use that because the pc freezes but I will try if I can do it in safe mode.

I tried it by using my CPU in power saving mode because I couldn't manage the GPU. Didn't change anything so I still think that the GPU is broken. When I managed to disable hardware acceleration in Windows settings I noticed that I could use Windows a little bit longer before it froze again.

Sorry double posting and thanks for your answers so far :)

I've been working on this for a week now. I took the GPU to warranty service but they tested it and said that they didn't detect any issues. So I started to suspect the motherboard and updated it's BIOS and now it works much longer than before (10-30 minutes!) but it still freezes. I managed to install GPU's drivers, a game and a GPU bencmarking software and I actually played the game for a while until it happened againn.

Should I take the motherboard to the warranty service? What do you thin what causes the problem?

EDIT: It freezes with the old GPU as well, it just takes a bit longer (maybe)!
