I unfortunately have a new HP laptop with Windows 8.1. Last week I was able to connect 3 different external HDDs to it with no problem. I updated Windows and now one of the HDDs is not recognised anywhere. It is a plug and play 1TB Toshiba HDD. I have even reset the whole laptop back to factory settings to try to get this device to work. It is not visible under disk management, device manager and no popups indicate it has been connected to the computer. There is no power as no light is coming onto the HDD. I have adjusted power settings to ensure USB devices aren't turned off. I have tried every fix I can find, uninstalling/reinstalling USB drivers, following troubleshooting. As it is a plug and play device, there are no drivers. The only message I get is that there has been hardware installed and a problem has been detected but this leads nowhere as there is no fix (see below). Help!?

Unfortunately, yes, I have tried just about everything I am capable of via other threads. Turning off windows firewall and AVG.

Trying to find it in Disk management, but doesn't show. However, there I can see my C:/ and D:/ which is the recovery drive, there are some smaller drives that appear to be duplicated within my computer without any names. Don't know how they emerged. 650mb each. Since reverting to factory settings, Windows has become very unstable, ie freezes regularly, with a blue screen while thinking. The CPU is full more often than not and I have been trying with little success to fix this by removing as many things as possible from the start menu and task scheduler. I've removed most apps that came installed.

I have updated all drivers, including BIOS. The USB sockets themselves are functioning with a different external Hdd (actually my old laptop which sadly died causing this frustrating need for a new one with stupid windows 8.1 installed!). As before, I think I have exhausted other peoples' solutions, the only other thing I can think of is that it is a Hdd dependent on the PC for the power. Maybe there is some setting preventing it from attaining that power? Gosh, I'm in mourning for my old trusty laptop! Thanks for your help regardless...
