Added More RAM Now Getting BSOD and Frequent Firefox Crashes

Hey Guys,

I just added RAM to my computer and now when I try to run Skype and Firefox together I get the BSOD but when I run them separately they are okay except for Firefox now crashing frequently.

The RAM I added was the one recommended by Patriot for my system and I followed an HP video for installing RAM to my particular PC step by step

The only things I can see I may have done wrong are when I opened the chassis the original RAM was in a black slot but according to HP you should use the blue slots closest to the processor first so I took the original RAM out and moved it to the blue slot closest to the processor and put the new RAM in in the blue slot next to it.

I also did not unplug anything external at any point but did unplug the internal power supply cable to the motherboard because it was in the way after which I unplugged the external power cable and then when done I plugged in the internal power supply cable followed by the external power cable

Solution
Can try them in a different rig, doubt if defective, possibly, but saying they are compatible with a chipset is rather vague (and one reason I don't deal with Patriot or Crucial). The DRAM needs to be compatible to a given mobo and CPU combo. If they knew you planned to mix this with a Samsung stick, I'd guess they wouldn't (hopefully) have suggested this

It is an AMD mobo with two black and two blue slots.

What are the model #s of the two sticks? Did you tell Patriot you were planning to mix it with your old DRAM? Patriot and Crucial are about the only two manufacturers I know of that even will suggest mixing DRAM and even they should let you know it's 50-50 (or less on a prebuilt) if the sticks will play together - and sounds like a prebuilt HP from your thread, with a locked BIOS not a whole lot you can do. Might try updating the BIOS to the latest version and try the sticks

I would also be sure to go into the BIOS and update it or reset it to defaults and reconfigure. (BIOS update often have fixes for different RAM timings) After you do this, then run memtest86 to confirm the hardware memory timings work as expected

Tried only the new RAM and it booted straight to the BSOD so I checked settings and let it restart and attempt to load again and it just loaded a black screen with the mouse pointer but nothing else.

Put the old RAM only in and now it is working just fine.

Patriot said it was compatible with my chipset so is it likely defective?

Thanks, I realize that now. I am having a hard time finding anything compatible with this mobo and PC period, where would you suggest I look that has a compatibility checker or something similar so I do not get incompatible RAM again. Tried Corsair and Patriot and they do not have my mobo or CPU listed and I have been unable to find much info just searching.

Thanks for the answers guys. Looks like this RAM is not compatible with my rig despite Patriot telling me it was, gave them complete specs ( mobo, cpu, existing RAM) and they said it would work but still does not.

Basically any time you get DRAM - simply get a single set of the full amount of DRAM you want, can recommend anything to mix with what you have as there is no guarantee it will play nice. Even if you got identical Samsung sticks there's no guarantees - reputable DRAM manufacturers will be upfront and say so.
