hi...i have a lenovo g570 with a hitachi 500gb hard disk..it stopped working a while ago so i had it replaced with another....i want to recover the data from my old hard disk..
I used a SATA to USB connector to try and connect it to my laptop and i only got a message saying that "Device driver not successfully installed"...i tried using Hitachi's Disk Fitness Test but it is no longer supported on Windows 7..

Can anyone suggest some other software so that i can recover my data??

Hi there,

Can you try connecting the hard drive to your PC and check if it shows up in disk management. If it does, then you can try saving your data with a data recovery software. Here are some programs that can help: http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

Hi Dorian,

No, the hard disk doesn't show up in the disk management. and when i tried to troubleshoot from the devices and printers tab, it just says device driver software not successfully installed and when i try to update it, i get that "no driver found". I have no idea what to do.

You can try on another SATA port, with another cable and if this doesn't make the drive show up - on another PC. In order to use a recovery software, the drive needs to get recognized. So if it doesn't, then you might need to contact a data recovery company for further help. Their services are a bit pricy, which is always relative when it comes to data and its' value.

Best of luck!

Hi fzabkar,

The drive does spin up. I can hear it spinning. The first tie i connected it to my pc it even started to install the device driver but was unsuccessful. I got this message..."Device driver not successfully installed".

@akki199421, it is difficult to know whether your problem is due to your USB-SATA adapter or your drive. Can you attach the drive directly to the SATA port of a motherboard in a desktop PC?

Can you show us how UVCView or USBDeview detect your drive? Perhaps it is not being detected as a USB mass storage device. A USB mass storage device would use the driver that is native to Windows.

1. The Hitachi Drive Fitness Test should indeed test your Htiachi HDD. Download from http://www.hgst.com/support/downloads#DFT
2. The DFT will test your HDD even if it is installed in a USB external HDD enclosure. I note you're using one of those SATA to USB adapters. We've found them very iffy to say the least. It really would be best if you would obtain a USBEHD enclosure. They're cheap enough and will come in handy for backups.
3. It's entirely possible your HDD is "dead in the water". If so, recovery of data could be a problem. As you probably know there are many recovery of data type programs available. It's a crap-shoot at best.
4. If your Hitachi HDD tests OK try to find another computer and connect the drive as a USB device. See if the data is available and copy to a flash drive/CD/DVD.
Good luck.
