Hello everyone,

First of all i'd like to introduce myself. My name is Jesse and I am 16 years old. I currently live in the netherlands. Altough my English is decent, I will appologize allready for the mistakes I make in my grammar and or spelling. Last year (June 2014) I have build my own PC with a friend that has helped me. I am run Everything ran OK for a couple of months till suddenly a grey screen appeared when i was playing Bf3. I could still hear my friends talk trough teamspeak and i also could still hear all the game sounds so my guess was that it was the GPU which crashed. Also the other games this problem occures are:

  • - Bf3
    - Nosgoth
    - Infestation survivor stories
I googled the problem and i found out it was, just as i thought, the GPU. I've tried several things to fix this problem like:

  • - Lowering the clock speed in AMD Overdrive (AMD-O)
    - Adding 10% power (AMD-O)
    - Setting the fanspeed around 40-50% (AMD-O)
    - Disabeling the HD audio device
    - Updating the driver
    - Downgrade to a previous driver
    - Also unplugged the seccond monitor for a while (It did not work)

Also i've checked the MSI afterburner program to check if the tempertures were too high etc. I found out that my GPU usage was everythime almost 100% (98%, 96%, 90% etc.).
My graphics card is an "Sapphire HD7950 Dual X 925MHz AMD PowerTune with Boost" (<- exactly what is says on the box)
My further PC specs are:
Operating System
Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core i5 3570 @ 3.40GHz 30 °C
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
FAN
Jetflo 120
RAM
8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 666MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
MSI Z77A-G43 (MS-7758) (SOCKET 0) 28 °C
Graphics
T19-2 (1280x1024@60Hz)
PL2273HD (1920x1080@60Hz)
3072MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series (Sapphire/PCPartner) 32 °C
Storage
232GB Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB ATA Device (SSD) 27 °C
931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZRX-00L4HB0 ATA Device (SATA) 17 °C
Optical Drives
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NSB0 ATA Device
Audio
AMD High Definition Audio Device

Now last week I tried again to fix the problem and people were posting on other forums that a BIOS (firmware) flash on my GPU may be a fix, I downloaded the (what I think) was the good BIOS at the site:www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/ and downloaded the program: ATIWinflash. When i installed the program, I launched it and saved my default BIOS and then inserted the new one I had just downloaded from the site shown above. It kept saying
Subsystem'sIDmismatch
So I googeled some more and I found out there was a way of flashing it trough the CMD with the command:
atiwinflash -f -p 0 NAMEOFBIOS.rom
. When I pressed enter nothing happened and the CMD interface gave me the line where it says in witch path I am in right now.
So after some more googeling I found out my GPU has a physical switch on it with 2 options:
1. Default BIOS
2. Editable BIOS
So when I saw that, I opened my case and saw that there was a wire in one of the two fans inside my GPU. Because of that (thick) wire the fan was not spinning at all. I bended the wire around so it was not interering with the fan and hoped that that fixed the problem. I tested it by palying one hour of "Nosgoth" and 30 minutes of BF3 and after that some more Nosgoth when sudenly the screen crashed again, but this time it was a red-ish screen with vertical lines on it. At that point I decided to make this thread and describe it as good as I can and hope one of the awesome people on this forrum can help me.

So. This is my problem and the fixes i have tried. Altough I still have not fixed my problem and i have been trying to for many any hours of work I am glad that I can learn all this new information and maybe in the future help some others. And ofcourse fix this issue :)

Thanks in advance for reading,
Jesse (Jesser110)

Solution
Try running your gpu not overclocked remove all amd Overdrive and msi after burner from the gpu.... and then see what happens the card may be damaged due to extreme heat and over clocking,,,

hey there johnny,

I've played some hours in bf3 and nosgoth and it all works fine now. Thanks! I guess at first it was the cable, blocking my fan, and the seccond crash was the overclocking i did. It is fixed now!

Have a nice day! :)
