Hello,

First problem:

I have a desktop computer running windows 8... And recently while logged in to my user account, at random I got a DOS screen stating something along the lines of "failed to find boot disk or disk has failed". I've also noticed a lag in the system when starting up. It does this constantly now, probably can stay on for about 5 minutes if I'm lucky without giving that error message.

I reset windows 8, deleting all my files, hoping maybe it was a registry issue, but still no luck, it seems to have improved, but only to get the same message again. (Maybe with a clean hard drive after resetting windows, there is less stress on the drive so it lasts a little longer?). I'm thinking the drive is dying, and replacing the drive should fix it, is this the case? Or is this a software issue I should be aware of?

Second problem:

I have an HP eMachines laptop, but the screen is nothing but vertical and horizontal colored lines. When connected to an external display, it works perfectly. I believe it is a cable issue, however, I don't know for sure. Does anyone happen to know what might cause this issue? I have opened the laptop and disconnected/reconnected the LCD but still no luck. Here are some screenshots of what the screen looks like, any help with either issue is greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Definitely sounds like a faulty or dying hard drive. Try running Burnintest and make sure it is testing your hard disk. http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm
This will tell you if it encounters any read/write errors on the disk.

Also try a CHKDSK /R to check for bad sectors and try to repair them -http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-2080276/chkdsk-windows.html

If you still experience issues just purchase a new hard disk. You can pick up a 1TB drive for cheap nowadays. Back up your data and install Windows on the new disk. - http://event.msi.com/us/win8-1/clean_install.html

Your second problem looks like a physically broken LCD screen. Has it been knocked or dropped? I doubt that is a faulty inverter or cable. If you...

I will definitely try Burnintest and CHKDSK /R! Still think it's a faulty drive as well, but worth a shot! Thanks!

And the laptop has never been knoecked or dropped. The screen stays the same no matter what position it's in. There was a faint image (very distorted) prior to all the lines. Once I opened it, checked the connections, and put it back together, the image was entirely gone. That was the main reason I was thinking it was a cable. Totally lost as to what it could be and don't really want to gamble $100 on a new screen if it has the same issue haha :p
