I have recently upgraded my graphics card to the ASUS GTX 980 Strix, after installing it and the driver I tried playing ARMA 3 and got to the menu screen and had just clicked on continue campaign when the screen went black and sounds stopped.

I had to reboot the computer, as task manager and windows + E did nothing for me.

I then updated the driver and tried again same result, I also tried BF3 on Origin to see if it was a steam problem same result. I then tried a ARMA 2 which is just installed on my PC same result.

I thought it may be just games so I tried the window experience index but as soon as it started the 3d test the screen went black.

Can anyone help as the whole reason I bought this expensive card was to play games with.

My system build:
Intel i7 975 Ext 3.33MHz
ASUS Rampage 2 Gene motherboard
OCZ 6gb Ram 1600MHz
OCZ Radeon R7 SSD

Solution
the PSU has multiple rails, have you tried to plug the gpu into different rails. I would stay off of rail 1 since all the molex and sata plugs run off that rail. try using like rail 3 for the 8 pin plug and the and rail 4 for the 6 pin. see if that helps out at all.
My guess would be the PSU, as the card goes to 100% its probably pulling to much amps for the PSU to handle and its nocking out the 12v rail for the GPU giving you a black screen. While the rest of the computer is still running you just cant see anything without resetting the hole computer.

Older power supply designs have multiple +12V rails. Most newer models have a single rail. This will depend on the power supply model.
Where multiple rails are used, it is up to the manufacturer to split the load across them by allocating different connectors to the different rails.
You can't tell without opening the supply how these connectors are allocated to rails, and it isn't something you typically have to worry about.

Antec currently have the HCP 1000 model. This is a high quality unit with 4 x +12V rails. Each rail is rated at 40A, with a combined rating of 1000W.
I'm guessing though you have the older Antec Truepower Quattro 1000. Antec has pulled this down from their website, but here is a review:
http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/power_supply/antec_truepower_quattro_1000w_atx_psu/1
The review states there are 4 x +12V rails each rated at 18A, with a combined rating of 70A or 840W.
At 18A per rail it would be possible to overload one of these, but in that case I would expect the supply to shut down.
I guess you could experiment with different PCI-E connectors from the supply, but you don't get to choose how they are wired. From the image in the review, you only get two modular PCI-E connections on the power supply so use both of these.
At the end of the day though, the GTX 980 only draws 165W.

You could have a faulty power supply or a faulty graphics card.
