My laptop has recently developed a problem I hope someone here can help me to resolve.

I have an Acer (about 3 years old). I installed a software application that is on a DVD rom recently. Yesterday I attempted to install the updated version of the same application. However, my laptop appeared to read the disc I inserted into the D:drive and then stopped. When I clicked on the D drive to explore it's content I got the message 'insert CD'.

I had inserted a CD already (it was still in the D drive). Yet my laptop was asking me to insert a CD, like it didn't recognise that there was a CD already inserted. I tried this a few times with the same results, i.e. being asked to insert a CD.

I then inserted the original software application disc (i.e. the application I was trying to update) abd my laptop failed to recognise that this CD had also been inserted in the D drive.

Yet, if I insert other software application discs or DVD films, the D:drive recognises them (although some DVD discs with films on them are not recognised). The DVD with films on them are all region 2, some will be recognised while others are not. This has always been the case.

But the fact that the original disc containing the software application DID install previously but now wont because the D drive cant see it (askes me to insert a CD when it is already inserted) is confusing.

I did the uninstall of the driver and then reboot, delete the upper and lower filters. None of these have worked. It seems the D drive used to read certain discs OK and now does not.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the drive is failing, test the disks that are not being read in another computer, if those are OK, I'd replace the drive in the system. You can try cleaning the read heads with some a little bit of iso alchohol and a cotton swab.
