how to listen to an audio cd on my aspireX3910 desktop

What USED to be a basic simple task is NOT on my newly acquired aspire X3910 desktop with Windows 7 for an OS. I've inserted the cd and nothing I seem to do will simply make it PLAY!!!
Embarrassing SIMPLE procedure...YES???
Any assistance would be muchly appreciated.

When you say you can't play, do you mean:
-- nothing happens when you insert the CD into the drive?
-- nothing happens when you insert any disc (CD, DVD, etc.) into the drive?
-- nothing happens when you try playing the CD in Windows Media Player?
-- or something else?
