Best Graphics Card set up Maximus vii formula

I have a maximus vii formula and i was wondering what would be the best way to max out graphics performance. I'm thinking about either quadfire r9 295x2 or 3 way sli 980. I have heard that the bottom pci slot is only wired for 4x and it would cause a bottleneck. Don't really care about Nvidia or AMD just who will give me the highest fps in 4k. I'm planning on getting a Corsair 1500i so power is no prob.

You are correct, the third X16 slot is X4, and also is pcie2.0.
I think that would completely negate any benefit of a third card.


With budget not any issue at all, the only way to fix that would be to use a X99 based motherboard.

Benchmarks I have seen show diminishing returns for the third and subsequent gpus.
My suggestion is to use two GTX980 superclock cards, at least for now.
Look towards a future GTX980ti and 8k vram. Possibly amd might announce R9-3xx cards.
