I have just bought a laptop with windows 8.1. I plugged in my hard drive and it's asking me to reformat it. But surely that will lose all the data. Is there any way round this ??

It's an external 1tb hard drive with power source. Old laptop is binned but it was working. Plus new laptop can see it and is telling me the correct drivers are drivers are installed but still wants to reformat it. I can't understand it

You might try using different usb ports. Perhaps you have drivers that are incompatible (perhaps it needs USB2 instead of USB3).
A system not recognizing an external drive is also often a sign of drive failure. The problem could be a loose cable as well. If your old laptop wasn't running windows then the drive might be formatted in a way that windows cannot read.
