Hello, I'm trying to build a 3-d modelling, architecture rendering machine/gaming desktop for home and school. I'm hoping the choices of fx8350 and gtx970 give an insight into the budget I'm going for but please recommend all and any parts you see fit!

p.s. I will be casing everything in the Rosewill Legacy W-1. It's quite roomy so it will fit almost everything for this build. Thanks in advance!

Since you intend to render and a cpu with more cores is all about rendering I'd recommend the 8 core AMD FX 8350 as opposed to any core i5 unit. While each core on the i5 performs crunching slightly better core for core, having double the number of cores will afford you with substantially shortened render times in video editing and...

What are your thought on R9 290 as well? That was my previous GPU choice before seeing GTX vs R9 benchmarks

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but both AMD and Intel's current lineup will be gone forever in the not-too-distant future.

Skylake (Intel) will be coming out in 2015, as well.

But anyways...

I know it's a bit over, but you could always substitute the R9 290 in.

Because they had more Bit, yet the performance si not that much if you compare with NVIDIA.

Also you work on those photoshop, video editing, 3d modeling. Which need more Bit on graphic cards.

So you are buying graphic card which doesn't have a lot of different on your Gaming also maximizing your work. And if you want to upgrade it over time, At this moment 295x2 (Is the best graphic card out there) (Which is the same with 290x Crossfire (2pcs))

Don't buy 295x2 because you need to pay like 300 bucks for only combining 290x 2pcs became 1 single card.

With your budget i suppose either R9 280x / R9 290 is the best out there.
And Also for 3d modeling etc, you gonna need a lot of Memory RAM.

Remember NVIDIA = Maximizing Gaming

Since you intend to render and a cpu with more cores is all about rendering I'd recommend the 8 core AMD FX 8350 as opposed to any core i5 unit. While each core on the i5 performs crunching slightly better core for core, having double the number of cores will afford you with substantially shortened render times in video editing and 3-d modeling. Leaving you more time to game. The only intel cpu alternative that will beat that will be a $300+ cpu core i7 hex core. For gaming I again recommend the FX-8350 as there are a some games which take advantage of 4 cores pretty heavily. You may lose a few min fps past 60 or 90 in some games vs the intel but so what? Can you tell the difference between 65 and 70 fps? or 93 and 98 fps?

If you intend to stream your games or fraps a quad core can struggle with this while playing games that are many threaded, in the more intense modern games. The 8 cores of the FX-8350 can stream or record efficiently while still devoting all other cores to the game itself. The price for the FX is lower and the price for performance is lower as well.

Put that extra money into RAM, go with 16 or 24GB of ram and research the virtual creation of a ram disk which is loads 10 times faster than even the best SSD and install your program on the ram disk. Still get an 250-256GB SSD since they are pretty cheap too and all of our other storage on an external USB TB drive.

AMD Power consumption extra vs i5 is $5/year higher. So total cost of ownership favors AMD again.
