my old crt monitor went out on my desktop--gateway from 2003, and am going to buy a new acer monitor for it. will they work together?

Yes regardless if you have a VGA or DVI it will work you just need to purchase a Adapter or cable that converts the VGA to DVI connection should you not have DVI natively. Most monitors sold will have combination of VGA/DVI/HDMI or Display port connections. VGA is slowly being fazed out but the support is mostly still there in lower end Monitors and TV's, almost all high end models have dropped VGA completely.
