Hi everyone. I am currently having issue with my PC and I think it might be a power issue but I am unsure. The issue started when I added two 120mm fans and an extra hdd. I started getting drive errors to the point where I couldn't even run a single program anymore had was forced to re install win8.1.

Before doing so I removed the extra hdd and two fans I have put in there previously assuming it was a power issue but the problem still persist even after the re-install so I'm guessing the damage was already done to the PSU or it was already being pushed past its limit already and I just gave it that extra nudge to cause it to not give enough power.

I was running this setup before the extra stuff was added with no problems whatsoever for about half a year and now I'm getting constant issue after the extra things were added and removed after the problem started. Any help would be great, thanks!

Hardware: fatal1ty 990fx, fx 8350, 1tb 7200, 9 120mm fans, 2x 4gig 1600 ddr3 ram, gtx 650 ti, an asus drw-24b1st dvd rw drive, and a 650w PSU.

Thanks, I'll look into getting a better quality PSU. Do you think despite it being big enough still be behind the issue? I ran a disk scanner and found no issues in the HDD so I would think it would be the only option for causing disk errors as well as the PC not starting from not providing enough power.

Is there any of reliable brands you recommend before I purchase a new PSU?

No, I only removed the second HDD(its an older HDD had it for about 3 years, was going to use it for storage) because the issues didn't start until after I that was put in there. I also remanaged the cable management in the PC a while ago to see if that will help as well and reset the motherboard to default settings and set fans to automatic instead of full on. So far windows have been updating without an issue, hoping it will stay that way.

HDD I am using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148840

I am using Ariolic Disk Scanner to check for errors. It says if there a read error in a block or not. It was windows the first time that said there were drive errors after I added that second HDD.

Hi, you can use this website here to calculate what your power supply requirements are: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

As for whether removing fans help, generally most 120mm fans only use between 2-3 watts. They shouldn't be having a significant impact on your rig.

As for your PSU, do bear in mind that PSUs of higher quality last longer. PSUs of lower quality tend to suffer more from capacitor aging, causing their power output to decrease over time.

I never leave my PC on 24/7 so I'm surprised the PSU is already going bad despite having it for less than a year, but I guess it's just the quality of the product.

Yup it's hard to say. There are various factors involved such as components used, quality control of the manufacturer and the conditions of use. It's hard to determine the exact cause of the problem until you examine the unit itself.

If your PSU is still under warranty you could send it in.

By the way, are you absolutely certain that the problem is with the PSU? If you have another PSU you could try it and see if it works.

Sadly its the only working PSU I have so I won't be able to test another one, but I have ran a disk scanner on the HDD and it showed no disk errors. I believe the PSU is the issue due to my PC not having video a couple of times on startup as well as my PC not turning on at all one of the times. Seems like the most obvious answer to me anyway.

It might also be a problem with your motherboard. But yeah you're right, the easiest first step is to replace the PSU then go from there. Best of luck.
