I recently purchased 2 new computers both running windows 8.1. For some reason I am unable to remote desktop into my work server (also connected to same network) through the home network, but if I disconnect and connect through my t-mobile broadband I can remote in just fine. I can still remote desktop into the server through home network from my older computer, but both computers running windows 8, I cannot. IT guy was unable to help, he hasn't a clue what's going on. Please help!

Solution
Has to be the local IP (192.168.bla.bla). Also, remote desktop needs to be enabled on the PC you wish to connect to. (Right click MY computer on PC you want to remote to - properties - remote options).

Our server has a static IP, that is the IP address I have always used and never had a problem with until now (with the new computers). Still use that same IP when remoting into it using my old computer (running XP) and can get in just fine. Seems the issue lies somewhere with Windows 8?

Okay so your work server is connected to your home network right? And you're using the local IP (192.168.xx.xx) to connect to your server from your old computer? Since you say that you can connect with your t-mobile broadband, but not with your home network, it's possible that your windows 8.1 PCs are blocking the connection because of the difference in security settings between public and private networks. Try going to your windows firewall settings and checking the inbound and outbound rules. Under Properties >> Advanced >> Tick the check boxes on all three profiles and press apply.

THANK YOU!! I had a 'My Computer' shortcut for the server (file viewing only) on my desktop. I right clicked on that and chose 'Remote desktop to this computer', changed the setting and now it is working!! Very appreciative beings I was on hold with HP for an hour and they couldn't help me either!
