I want to connect my PC to my Sky router but it's downstairs and I don't have a WiFi card built into my PC, can I use a wireless access point or repeater to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable? If so could anyone suggest compatible repeaters/wireless access points?

Thanks

I was initially going to do that but a friend of mine told me the connection isn't great by dongle

It depends on how strong your wireless signal is, how far you are from your router, and how strong the receiver on your dongle is. USB 2.0 has a 60MBps speed so you could theoretically get that speed. Can you receive the WiFi signal with your mobile device? You can extend the range of your WiFi signal using repeaters (for wireless solutions) or by adding a router (which will require an ethernet cable). Alternatively you can use an ethernet wall plug adapter (something like this http://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Powerline-Wall-Plug-Adapter-PLA4111/dp/B00D7GF4XC). Or you can buy a PCIe slot wireless card which will give you greater speeds and should also have a stronger receiver.

I would too recommend a USB dongle. You can get them to mount remotely from your machine or you can just us a USB extension on them.

The device you want is called a client bridge not a AP or repeater. Hard to say if they would be better than USB. They are much more expensive of course. They have some advantages if you buy ones with directional antenna but mostly this is for outdoor long range use.

The main downside of a client-bridge is you must configure them, usb windows pretty much holds your hand getting it setup.

Decided to go with the PCIe adapter - thank you for the help :)

It all depends on the quality, I bought a 20$ cisco dongle for my 7 year old desktop, and it works well with almost full bars at 30-40 meters away from the router. So I recommend investing in one of these devices otherwise you may have to go through the struggle to access your nearest Ethernet port.

Cheers, :)
