Total noob here so go easy, I have wiped clean an hdd salvaged from an old laptop and I am trying to install Ubuntu to it, but I am not doing so well. I bought a usb transfer cable for the hdd as I thought it was a case of download Ubuntu connect hdd and send download to it and while I can send it to it, it doesn't seem to be anything other than a download file nothing seems loaded onto it. I also have a ssd that I would prefer to install it onto but I cant even locate that on my laptop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated but please in simple terms if you could.

Thanks

ok what you need to do is burn the ubuntu ISO file you downloaded onto a a blank DVD and then place the DVD in the pc at set the dvd drive as main boot device at system start up and you should be presented with a installation screen from which you should be able to understand the rest of the process

there are many tools out there which allows you to put ubuntu onto a flashdrive or any usb device and boot straight from the usb device and install the os to the hard drive .. i think you have to do something you bios before and ssd works but am not familiar with that so i cant help there .. however you can try a program called unetboot ,it turns a flashdrive into a bootable disk so you can install your linux os off of it .. search for the program on google
