I have a system that is few yrs old I restored to use it for some testing on VM's its running Win 8.1 smoothly but wont run win 7 on a VM well at all.

The ram is old so I doubt I will get the same rame, is it ok to add 4gb to the 4gb of a different brand etc?

I have upgraded ram in the past but always matched it up.. For this I dont want to spend more than I have to.. RAM is plug and play for most part right?

Thanks

4GB for Windows 8 32 bit, regardless of edition. For 64 bit, the standard edition of Windows 8 maxes out at 128GB. For Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise, 512GB.

Ram should be latest to DDR3 Version and should match up.

Thanks yea I know all that but that wasn't quite my question. I just need enough to Run my VM's smoothly. 7 is problematic for a lot of people on VM although it works great on Virtual-box on my mac. I am just wondering as long as its the same kind of ram.. Then brand should not matter right?

Any time you mix DRAM even of the same exact model it can be and often is problematic, specs mean very little, especially today as most older DDR3 is made with lower density 2Gb memory chips and the newer sticks use 4Gb, also most all DRAM (1600 and up) uses XMP and there is DRAM today that works off of PnP (the Fury lines) - Best to get a set of the full amount you want and then if the old will play it's a bonus, else can be sold off or put in another rig
