So basically we have two computers which we need to transfer large files between. These files will be large rendered videos. Right now we're using a usb 3 external hard drive, the western digital passport ultra 2tb. We've looked at the option of using a hub (http://www.amazon.com/Support-Offline-UCtech-Docking-Station/dp/B00LS6U73K/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1423170593&sr=1-4&keywords=ssd+docking+esata\#customerReviews) with an ssd, so basically there's be one SSD permanently connected in the hub on computer 1, and then another two ssds, which would be moved between computers 1 and 2.

Given the price options, what would be the best solution? I'm assuming there might be other solutions as well that I haven't thought of. Thanks for any advice!

I made a slight mistake - the switch I recommended is a gigabit one (capped to 100 megabytes a second) while a 10gig switch (can, in theory, manage 1 gigabyte per second) - here's a good 10gig switch: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00B46AEE6/ . It's a bit pricey but you get what you pay for - EXTREME performance :)
