I work for a public library and we are considering upgrading our 50Mbps bandwidth to 100Mbps.

Most of our switches are 100Mbps for VLANs and QoS. Do I need to upgrade those to gigabit switches to fully utilize the new bandwidth?

Thank you!

Edit: we are typically using 50'ish computers/devices and 15 phones on this network.

If you are going to buy switches there is not a huge difference in the price anymore.

Do you need to replace the switches just because of this... I would say no.

Most switches that are moderately new have the ability to run at wirespeed. This means all ports can send and receive at 100 at the same time at total of 200m. On a 24 port switch this means 4.8g of total bandwidth. So you could have 2 machine sending file between each other at 100m fully using their ports and still have other machine using the internet connection and not be affected.

The thing you would have to worry about is say you had switch1 and switch 2 connected by a cable. This means all the users on switch 1 combined could only use 100m to talk to users on...

You need to look at your traffic patterns. If it is all internet and nothing else then you will never even come close since the internet will max well before the switch will.....other than the port going to the router itself
