what symbols to take out when getting an error message-------" label syntax is incorrect"

Hello, I have read all your links and tried all the solutions. When I type in C:\> cd%windir%\system32 and get the error directory or volume label syntax is in correct. Win xp I have tried taking out \ and or % and i doesn't work. Appreciate any advice,

it's suppose to be cd windows\system32 (providing your windir aka windows directory is windows)

Thanks, I am a little rusty when it comes to dos commands, and it all works fine, when I noticed a space after cd. Sorry to bother you all.
