Hello. I am having an issue with a couple wireless adapters and was wondering if anyone here could help. A while back I purchased an ASUS X551MAV notebook. The internal wireless adapter is fine and has no issues, but I purchased a C.Crane Super USB Antenna to use as well. The C.Crane Super USB adapter works fine on my desktop PC. However, when I plug it in to my notebook it continuously turns on and off. Trying to isolate the problem, I tried hooking up a Linksys AE1000 wireless adapter to the notebook and it did the same exact thing. Turned off/on over and over. I took the Linksys AE1000 off of it's base/USB extension cable, plugged it directly into the notebook, and it worked perfectly. Strange how the AE1000 will work when directly plugged into the notebook, but if I use the extension cable it just instantly turns on/off over and over.

The notebook comes with Windows 8.1 installed. I didn't like it, so I installed Windows 7. The same thing happened on both Windows 8.1 and 7 with the USB wireless adapters.

All drivers are installed and updated.

Both USB wireless adapters work perfectly on my desktop, so there doesn't seem to be any problems with the devices themselves.

I have tried disabling the internal wireless adapter and the problem persists.

The USBs are set to not allow the computer turn them off to save power.

I am kind of lost on why these wireless adapters keep turning on/off, so any help would be appreciated. Please let me know if you need any more information to help solve this problem. Thanks.

Update: Looks like my laptop just didn't have enough power to run the wireless adapters. The powered USB hub I ordered came in the other day. Running the wireless adapter through the powered USB hub allows it to work perfectly. Thank you all for the suggestions. :)

I have tried while plugged in and on battery power alone with the same on/off results. Looking through the battery options, I have maximized all performance settings I can find. I also tried to right click on the wireless adapter icon in the "Network Connections" window and change the power settings there - Properties>Configure>Power Management and uncheck the "Allow this computer to turn off this device to save power" box. I am not sure if it is doing anything as the wireless device is constantly showing up and disappearing due to it turning off/on repeatedly.

I should add that this problem happens as soon as I plug in the wireless adapters and it continues with the off/on until I unplug it.

I haven't thought of that. Will buy one and update this if it works.
