Buying a Compaq Presario C700 on Ebay...I have already purchased the item, which was advertised as having 2+Ghz processor, and indeed the screen shot seems to show this. But when I looked up the same machine online it was stated as having about 1.4GHz. Does this mean it's upgraded, or overclocked? If the latter, it must run hot. As a second question, is it possible to obtain a cooling software that actually controls cpu usage?? Thanks for help!

Ok thanks.....how about the chance of cooling a laptop cpu. The laptop I'm currently using (which has no sound, which is why I'm going for a new -used- one) gets hot and shuts itself down after about 1 hour usually. Then it starts up again ok. Is there an effective (free!) way to get the cpu to run cooler? (perhaps I should have started a new thread for this question - sorry - new to this forum)

I wouldn't offer more than $50 for that outdated thing, and that's being very generous. A 1.6GHz or even a 2GHz Core2Duo is going to be very slow. IT has a small slow HDD, lousy intel integrated graphics on that terrible screen size.

Oh dear - o well, I'll just have to start saving for something better... any recommendations for someone on a tight budget - what would you give $200 US for (used) on Ebay?

Hey man don't worry about it, as long as it lasts a little while it will get the job done. I like having up to date PC's but I am terrible about replacing my laptops. I still have an HP DV4 that was top of the line from 08 and a cheap compaq from 11.

yeah that's true IamTimTech - and I often think - though I can't afford the latest, there are some (maybe about 60% of the world's population?) who would be glad even to have one from 2000 or so... and it does get most of my jobs done. I have never felt the need for a tablet, smartphone (unless you call having alarm and clock functions smart), or the like. Still, we are the lucky ones!!

A couple things. This thing is going to be slower than molasses. The last thing you would want is something that "that actually controls cpu usage". Meaning you want the cpu to throttle and even go slower. Between the cpu, hard drive and probably a paltry amount of ram I don't think it will be able to render web pages. Try a low demand Linux distro.
