i dont know if i should buy bigger graphics card and smaller case or bigger case and smaller graphics card

i want to buy a new computer soon but i dont know if i should go with the evga sc gtx 970 and a corsair 900d or a evga gtx 980 sc and a cooler master haf x?

Ehmm, you are mixing apples with oranges.... if you are thinking about a 980, i would choose the 980 and the cooler master haf x if you are not going to SLI and have some monstrosity like two RLs on the case.
