Long story short, I got an amazing deal on the 280x Toxic on eBay but it started having problems about a month after I got it. The guy who sold it to me has been amazing and said I could either wait till Sapphire sends him a replacement (it was still under warranty) or he could send me the MSI 290 instead. I've been doing some reading and some people say the 290 reference card runs too hot to be used and was wondering what you guys think I should do.

Tough call. I could go either way.

If you are gaming at 1080p, you will not notice the difference in most games --- higher resolutions is likely a different story.

The Sapphire R9 280x Toxic is one heck of a card --- it will give a GTX 780 a good run for its money. It's issue (as you have likely encountered) is the PowerTune volts on boost is likely a bit high to reach those performance levels --- the factory OC has maxed that baby out, fer sure.

The R9 290 Reference becomes tempting because a little under-volt tweaking can seriously drop your temps and power-draw, and for $100 and less, after-market air/water cooling can take that sum beech to the moon.
