I have been building a pc, and thus far everything has worked. The graphics card, RAM, CPU, BIOS, etc, all are fine. When I go into the BIOS, it says "Sata Port X: Not Present" I have touched the hard drive - it feels warm, and is buzzing. It also does not register when I enter Windows 8.1 installation. I am seriously worried this could be a motherboard SATA controller problem, but the rest of the mobo works fine. In the "board explorer" feature. all of my other components that have been inserted into slots are registered - the SATA ports on that feature say "Empty." they don't register the cable I plugged into it. Thanks for the help.

The way to test it is to plug another drive in and see if that drive is recognized. It's not uncommon for the circuit board on a drive to go out making them not seen by the computer while mechanically the drive spins up and works fine.

Try reseating the sata cord, if no change, try OTHER sata ports on the motherboard. If still cannot detect, possible bad cable or bad ssd drive.
