Cannot sign into Safe Mode in XP, or do any work because neither the PS2 Mouse or PS2 keyboard work. Corrupted entries in the Registry? I read an article here:
On Microsoft's site - kb/258795, the article explains the problem for Windows 2000. Any chance it might be the same issue?

P5P800 motherboard, 3ghz cpu
Hitachi 1 TB hard drive
Radeon AGP graphics card
4 gb / Ram

Sorry, I'm at work and just pulling this stuff from memory. If model numbers are needed, please ask.

Also, I don't have another XP machine to pull the registry from in order to do what's advised in the article. Anyone have a working XP machine that uses the PS2 keyboard and mouse, that would be willing to email me the entries so that I can try restoring that section?

Suggestions?

Solution
More than likely, the same fix that works on Windows 2000 will work on Windows XP. The one is just a slight iteration of the other in terms of the underlying operating system.

I fired up an XP machine and made the four registry files as suggested in your KB article, two for Safe Mode and two for Safe Mode with Networking. If you are interested, private message me your email address and I can send them to you.

Unfortunately, Friend Dragon, I applied the .reg files, but still no joy. I had high hopes that would fix the problem as it seemed the logical course...

Still open to suggestions...

The ports work as I am using the same motherboard for a Windows 7 installation. Initially, I wanted to use my old XP installation on my hard drive on a new hardware platform, but can't get it to work. I was doing a repair (i.e., reinstalling just the XP system, but keeping the programs), but noticed that the PS2 mouse / keyboard don't work in safe mode.

If I read correctly, you pulled a hard drive with XP on it and have attached it to new hardware? Sounds like we've found the problem. The best suggestion I can think of is to perform a repair installation of XP. It will pretty much overwrite your old copy of XP on the disk but leave your programs in place, mostly. In the process however, it should install drivers for the hardware changes that have taken place. And of course, there is also the likelihood you will have to reactivate Windows afterward. Your description makes it sound like you were attempting something along these lines, but Safe Mode isn't needed for a repair installation, so I'm not sure the sort of repair you were attempting to perform.

@bigpinkdragon286 - Yes - you read it right. However, I've done the repair installation so many times, I've lost count. I keep the old MB within "hook up" distance so I can switch between the two platforms to experiment with changes I've done. No go. Under the old platform, I changed the ide controller driver to a generic, and shutdown the PC in order to bring it up on the new platform. No go. I get the dreaded 7E BSoD. When I try to bring it up in Safe mode on the old platform - frozen mouse/keyboard. Safe Mode on the new platform - I get the msg, "Windows XP Setup cannot be run in Safe Mode". Verified my boot.ini file doesn't contain the Safe Mode=minimal string, which is commonly the problem with the msg. Now, no reflection on your efforts, but I believe I began to see that msg after I applied the MS fix for the frozen PS2 mouse/keyboard. I'm at the point of simply copying everything out to another hard drive, formatting the old drive, re-installing XP on the new platform, and re-install *all* my software.

I'm really burned out on MS OS's. I'm NEVER going to own a Mac - ever. And, if it wasn't for the lack of interesting games on Linux - that's where I'd be moving. I've always admired Unix, ever since my Apple ][ days when I learned that it was easily (text-based back then) a 10mb OS. My Apple had 143 kb disks, so it was never going to happen. But, then Linux came along in the early 90's, and I bought a Slackware version (4 CDs) at a computer swap meet, and <snap>, computers were fun again. Why, oh, Why, did corporate American middle-management buy into the MS lie in the late 80's? Why...why...Why?! Ever see the trainwreck MS Windows 1.0? No company save MS could make such a roach-infested piece of garbage, and survive it. And, Windows 2.0. It took Windows 3.1 before Bill Gates started to dig himself out of the lies that he continued to tell. Their only saving grace was MS DOS. MS DOS was to MS, and Windows, as the Apple ][ was to Apple, and the Mac.

BUT, I digress (hugely)...
