So I have been having crashing problems on a PC I built recently. Often when I am playing games, my PC reboots/crashes and I get a "no signal to monitor" on my screen. I tested my RAM and am going to test my CPU and GPU next. Before I did that, however, I noticed that my MOBO has a 24-pin connector obv for the power. The PSU cable was 20 pin and a separate, but connected 4 pin connector. I NEVER CONNECTED THE 4 PIN, just the 20. Is it possible that this is the issue? I have been getting somewhat low 12v readings around 11.55-11.7.

Solution

Yes. The extra 4 pins supply extra power to the motherboard. By omitting these 4 pins, means less power to the motherboard, and is the likely cause of the problems.

Thanks for responding brispuss. Would only having 20 pins connected cause not enough power to the mobo? Seems like an obvious yes but I am a little out of my element here. First build!

Your PSU has enough watts but isn't high quality. You would need a psu upgrade. I have had these problems before with a cheap 720W PSU. I put a 500W PSU in and it was fixed.
The corsair CX series are budget PSUs with cheap low-quality parts.

Thanks for responding unliked. I think I will upgrade my PSU in the near future. After connecting the last 4 pins my 12v reading is now above 12. I wonder if that was the likely culprit? I will still upgrade my PSU- should never have skimped on it but I'm wondering if my PC will be stable in the meanwhile now.

If your PC doesn't crash then you should be all good. But I would still recommend upgrading your PSU as you could get better performance from your graphics card but upgrading. Because the GPU runs slower when it isn't receiving enough power to run at its full potential.
