Just built something similar to this today. If you need HDD for storage, get a smaller SSD to make room for the HDD. Should be right in line with your budget. Ignore all the superbiz discounts, apparently you only get the $5 off once.

If your using your old ssd and hdd and want an i7 this one looks good i would change the ram out for Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB but thats just me

Just make sure the RAM can fit under the Noctua cooler.

@AMDThunder Yes I do, and I am willing to make the hour drive their if needed...lol (kinda close)

Also ty to those who posted some information. I made this late in the night so I may have skipped things. I'll look through the lists and pick the best one I believe for my situation. If anyone wants to keep me updated or this thread with computer parts, that'll be awesome.

I really like @babernet_1 choices so far, mainly because I've used other computers with the newer i5 and I still felt like it was missing some helpful processing power. The reason I choose i7 is because I do a lot of Virtualization for my job and I also do gaming as a competitive hobby..

Here's another build with the 4970K. Honestly, I think its a waste of money for gaming. By the time you can use its full potential in games, it will probably be time (or past time) to upgrade again. Case is obviously personal choice. You may want to go with a full tower since you have room in your budget. I listed the one I purchased because its super quiet, like I can barely tell its on when its sitting on the desk right next to me. Mounted the 212 EVO sideways to make sure it completely cleared the side door. So again, think about a full tower. Mounting it sideways made it a little tight getting the CPU power connector plugged in, but it works. Personally I'm glad I didn't spend more on a full tower. Enough about mine, this is for you!

The GPU and memory are part of a combo deal. There's another one that partpicker isn't seeing for some lower profile ram which I would recommend if using the 212 EVO.

Can you explain why the i5 would be better for gaming? Thanks :D I love the information you have given me so far. I have been looking at the i5 and the socket type. will this impede on future performance if I went the i5 route?

I can try and hold off on a GPU till the 970's are fixed, I do have a 2g gtx 760 (which is crap) and I will be upgrading but I can play games on it on minimal till I upgrade the GPU, if this helps with recalculating the prices.

I assume for tax returns I'll be getting at least $500+ which I could use for a GPU.

Edit: Also, I hope I am not irritating you by throwing multiple curve balls at you, I am very thankful for your responses btw.
Edit2: I also like full towers, gives me more breathing room.

The i5 isn't necessarily better for gaming. The i7 just isn't going to get you any better performance. As long as the 1150 socket sticks around, you're not impeding your upgrade path. Read what Tom's has to say about it here. Will the 4790K allow you to go 6 years before needing to upgrade instead of 4? Absolutely maybe. Personally, I know 4 years from now, I'm gonna be looking to upgrade anyway.

There's absolutely nothing to "fix" on the 970. Its the best card for the money. Some can argue for the 290X, but it can depend on what games you play. Some get better results with Nvidia, others with Radeon. The 290X will run hotter and has a higher power requirement.
