Okay, with this PC I'm going to want to play basically any game on high graphics. The games I really want it to excel in are: ArmA III, CS:GO, Far Cry 4 GTA V and most of your new modern games. Please tell me if anything is over kill and something that needs to be upgraded.

Specs:
CPU: i5-4690k
GPU: GTX 980
Motherboard: ASUS Z97 K
RAM: 8GB Ripjaws
Power Supply: 600 Watts Corsair Cx600m
Case: Cooler Master Elite 431
CPU Fan: Enermax ETS-T40-TB

If you are planning to overclock, get an aftermarket cpu cooler like cooler master hyper 212 evo. I would prefer ASUS Z97-A over Z97-K. Other than that, your build looks good.

Similar question to the above really. Just ordered components to build my first pc in over 15 years so would just like to have feedback from people - is there anything I should add to the below?

CPU: Intel i7-5820K
CPU Fan: Intel Stock
GPU: Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix
Motherboard: Asus X99-S ATX
RAM: G Skill Ripjaws 4 16GB
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
PSU: Corsair RM650 80 Gold Plus
Case: SilverStone SST-FT03B USB 3.0

The main question I have is do I need an aftermarket fan for the CPU?

Thanks,

Definitely yes for a 6 core processor. Get Noctua NH-D14 or NH-D15, if you want to get an air cooler. Get Corsair H105, if you want an AIO liquid cooler.

Thanks. I also realised that I ordered a wrong case. Thought it was ATX as it supports any GPU but turns out its Mini-ATX. Was just able to make a change before they discpatched to the Corsair 540. A little dissapointed as wanted a small form factor but was not willing to compomise on the OC GPU.

I don't expect to have a need to OC the CPU (for now) but will keep eye on the temps with stock fan.

Ah, had not seen your answer - thanks for your input. I'm just wondering why intel bother to supply a fan with their CPU's if I would need an aftermarket product instead. Especially since the GPU will be doing the heavy lifting as mostly for gaming...

The 980 is a waste of money for the little bit of extra performance you get. Buy the 970 instead.

Many people run their processor in their stock speed only. In that case, the stock intel cooler is more than enough. You need an aftermarket cooler only when you overclock. So that is why intel is providing the stock CPU cooler.

There's really nothing wrong with the 970 GTX. There have been a few reports where people have experienced issues with the 970 GTX's usage over 3.5 GB. And in those situations, people were running very high end situations. If you play at 1080, it's the best card on the market.

Following the various advice received I have made a few changes to the H/W config previously stated. Also included additional cooling as suggested (went for liquid in the end). New spec below - should have all the parts redy for build tomorrow. Can't wait!

CPU: Intel i7-5820K
CPU Fan: Corsair H60
Wireless Card: Dual Band N600 TP Link
GPU: Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 Strix
Motherboard: Asus X99-S ATX
RAM: G-Skill Ripjaws 4 16GB
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
HDD: WD 1TB SATA III
PSU: Corsair RM650 80 Gold Plus
Case: NZXT 440H (White)

I'll let you know what my thoughts are after the build...

Why 5820k when 4790k is more than enough for any game. Instead of getting 5820k you can get 4790k and a very good liquid cooling like H105. H60 is not a great cooler :(

You're right that the 4790k would be more than enough for what I want to do but as it's a completely new build it made no sense to go for old tech (as in DDR3) - while today it doesn't really matter, I wouldn't want to have to replace the motherboard when upgrading in 2-3 years. Just future-proofing myself (as much as I can).

From what I have seen/read, the H60 should provide me with sufficient CPU cooling. Will let you know once built & tested.

Right, so the weekend is over and the PC is now built & tested. As expected, it's running very quickly & smoothly.

Unfortunately I cannot attach any files here so I'll provide my Unigine (Haven benchmark 4.0) score below. To confirm, my CPU has been overclocked to a safe 4.6 using Asus AI suite 3. GPU boost tweaked to another safe 1,350 MHz.

Unigine Score = 1,854
Average FPS: 73.6
Render = Direct3D11
Mode: 1080p 2xAA Fullscreen
Preset: Custom
Quality: Ultra
Tessalation: Extreme
