On the risk of creating a double thread (I have spent quite some time reading up though):

I am building a gaming pc. Specs:

mobo: MSI Z97 Gaming 5
cpu: Intel core i5 - 4460
gpu: Asus Radeon R9 280X DC2 3GD5
mem: 8 GB DDR3
hdd1: samsung ssd 250 GB
hdd2: seagate barracuda 1000GB 7200 RPM
psu: Coolermaster G550M

After putting the pieces together, the system seems to boot, but no video output (connected through standard vga cable).
After several experiments i discovered that removing the psu power from the gpu led to video output throught the internal intel graphics. But now the mobo says there's no pci-e card installed (in board explorer in BIOS).
I read somewhere in the forums that the gpu needs both power plugs inserted to be able to be recognized by the mobo. But how? Where is the video output gone?

I feel like it's something very simple I am overlooking, but what?
The cable that comes out of the psu has a 6+2 connector, and as an extension a second 6+2 connector. Does it matter in which order/position I insert them?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Solution
you need to connect the monitors cable to the gpu input and not the mobo's! do you have a successful post with or without the gpu? esure gpu is securely sitted into pcie slot (the one clossest to cpu) and cables hooked up properly. also try a hardware reset (clear cmos). i hope bios upgrade completed with out any issues!

Card does not show up in the system
what do you mean? if you can enter windows, you need drivers in order to show up properly!

thanks. Gave it a try, but screen turns black when I turn on the pc. In the meantime upgraded the BIOS as well, to no avail.Card does not show up in the system, although power led on the card are green.

solved: problem turned out to be connection between card and monitor. Bought new cables, now everything works. (and the bios updrage went smooth).
Thanks for the help.
