hello people,
I have read many topics about this problem or an alike issue. however, I am not able to find a solution for my problem. I have this (important data)external hdd that I just cant assign a drive letter to. it is a primary partition (is that why I cannot assign a drive letter and if that is the problem how I can change this without data loss) and shown in disk manager. further I have tried to use test disk to extract the files but that is not doing the job (not sure why is that). What can I do to make it work?? I have read a solution to a problem very much the same.. where the guy could change the primary partition (in order to assign a drive letter) but was forced to erase data. I am looking for a solution to keep or recover my data from is hdd. please.. if somebody can help me I would be so grateful.. I have many travel pictures stored :S

Solution
1. press "[Windows Key]"
2. right-click Computer
3. click manage
4. click disk management (near bottom)
5. see if your external drive shows up

If it does show up:
1. right-click in the white rectangle next to the drive (if it is the only other drive connected to your computer it should say something like "Disk 1")
2. click Change Drive Letter and Paths...

Solution
Hey there, werena!

I'd suggest to check in with your HDD manufacturer's website for a diagnostics tool to test the drive's health and SMART status.
Also can you share what is the status of the drive in Disk Management again?
Another thing you can try is un-installing the drivers under USB controllers in Device Manager and then reboot your system and wait for Windows Updates to re-install those.
Here's a tutorial you can use: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff553572%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Hope this helps you! Keep me posted! :)
