When do you think a RAM upgrade is necessary?

For gaming purposes, when do you think 8gb will not be enough? Currently it's the recommended amount, so by what year do you think I should upgrade to 12gb? I'm thinking next year in 2016. Or do you think it'd be once another generation of consoles are released?

I'd say around 2017-2018 is when people will suggest going to a high amount of memory but not really a necessity, and I'd say around 2019 is when you really need more than 8GB...I remember coming on to Tom's around 2012 and 8GB was suggested but 4GB was totally fine.

It's been doubling every 2 and a half years or so, so it's coming due already, there are already games that call for 8GB recommended , with OS and startup overhead and people more and more having other things running, most all of my clients that have gaming rigs have already jumped to 16GB

Well if game developers continue to get lazier and release games that are incomplete (I.E. Assassin's Creed Unity) even minimum requirements are gonna call for a pretty beefy computer. And I'm sure game companies are gonna do that more often 'cause most of them just want their money as soon as possible. Taking that into consideration is why I was thinking that 2016 would be a good year to upgrade to 12gb.

Depends on what you do - one way some gamers and others gauge how much you need is to look at typical prebuilts - whatever they have is generally at the low end as the manufacturers have always been low balling the DRAM in a rig figuring more profit if you upgrade through them, and right now the most common is 6-8GB and many are out with 16GB. Mor3e and faster is the way it's headed, i.e. the DDR4 that's out - if you look through the forums you see tons of folks saying 1600 is all you need, but DDR4 is here, and it starts at 2133, the manufactures have basically just ignored the lower 1866 spec for DDR4, also the 1 and 2GB sticks are gone
