Same performance cheaper price?

Solution
The Gigabyte is louder and longer but slightly faster. The EVGA is a little bit shorter and quieter but slightly slower. They are about the same with just a couple of differences. I would get the one that's cheaper.

Well, the Gigabyte 270 is slightly faster @1178 MHz core clock vs EVGA's 1165 MHz.

Another difference is the power connectors, EVGA requires 2 x 6 pin connectors while the Gigabyte requires 1 x 6 pin and 1 x 8 pin.

Other than that, it's the fans

1) Free games?
I'm not aware of any currently running promotion, just the price drops for R9-290 and R9-290X

2) $50 diff?
Yes, if comparing an Asus R9-290X to an EVGA GTX970. While that's fair, they are NOT equal in performance.

3) Performance diff equal?
No.

Over 20 games a stock GTX970 is 7% faster on AVERAGE. We also know the GTX970 overclocks a bit better so let's say at least 10% faster...

Oh, and the GTX970 supports MFAA (for anti-aliasing) which can boost frame rate even more (varies a lot). Let's say 5% to 20%.

4) GTX970 other stuff:
- quieter
- can DISABLE FANS for no noise (not all models. Gigabyte does not I believe. EVGA does.)
- HDMI 2.0 (4K at 60FPS)
- H.265 hardware support
- vox light (for future games)

5) *GTX970 memory issue:
I must mention this. Yes, it can cause stutter if a game uses more than 3.5GB. That's currently a very small minority of games. There's also a probable fix for this coming despite NVidia saying no current driver fix coming.

I expect the worst-case scenario will be an option (or done automatically) to force only 3.5GB usable of video memory to avoid the slow 512MB memory.

Summary:
I highly recommend the EVGA GTX970 SC 1.17GHz ACX 2.0 model:

Obvious fanboy post.

It's a good thing that overall the 290x is faster. Considering the number of mantle games coming out and that AMD cards have better compute.

"Oh, and the GTX970 supports MFAA (for anti-aliasing) which can boost frame rate even more (varies a lot). Let's say 5% to 20%."

great, a Nvida version of FXAA. OMG, Nvidia cards don't have SMAA. See how stupid listing something thing like this is. It's not worth mentioning.

- Quieter will vary from card to card and cooler design. Seeing as Nvidia and AMD has some shared manufacturers, the point is totally moot.
- And so can AMD cards since a long time. It's built right into the CCC.
- True it doesn't have HDMI 2.0 but then again Nvidia doesn't support the latest display port. Of course, you don't need HDMI to run 4k as Display port has that covered.
- This is another one of your piddling points that only proves that maxwell is the newer architecture. H 265 isn't even finalized yet so I doubt it will mean anything but even if it does, AMD has openCL and openGL, which will greatly accelerated H.265, even without hardware support. Not that it really matters cuz H.265 won't be out for some time.
- This last point does nothing for your claim.

Can you seriously not come up with points of more worth than above? I've got a 970 in my system right now and I'll tell you one big issue with it. Nvidia cards suck for anything but gaming compared to AMD. AMD's driver's do multi-screen better, they actually let you modify advanced color settings, let you overclock and set power targets, and you can even enhance video and audio. Frankly, Nvida's drivers suck.
