Relative performance of STOCK cards compared to the Sapphire tested:

GTX760: 67%
HD7970: 72%
R9-290: 95%

So a stock R9-290 is on average almost 42% faster than a GTX760 and has double the video memory (though video memory won't affect any games for you likely currently). The differences on average between cards is less with a weaker CPU like any AMD offers.

The GTX760's big advantage for some people is Shadowplay (or OBS) to stream or record gameplay with minimal performance loss.

Without getting too in-depth of the pros and cons I'd recommend the R9-290 if you have the budget, and the HD7970 if you don't. I'd recommend the GTX760 last only if it offers a feature...
These sound like USED cards so without knowing the models and what the cost is for them it's hard to give advice.

Your current computer specs would be useful:
a) CPU
b) amount of main memory (4GB or 8GB?)
c) 64-bit Windows? (32-bit would be problematic)

You might want to consider THIS card (R9-290 for $240 after rebate):

If you can get an HD7970 or GTX760 for $150 or less and you know it's reliable then that's probably a good idea. As for which one there are pros and cons but 2GB may be an issue for upcoming games but it's really hard to say at that performance level.
