Built new computer with ASROCK Z97 Extreme3 plus 2 HIS R9 290 Video cards. Fired it up and get a request to plug in two 4 pin power cables on motherboard. Apparently need more PCIe power. Can I plug the 4 pin molex connector into a perhipheral power source on my supply?

Solution
+1 Mattios. Assuming the "..request to plug in two 4 pin power cables.." came from the monitor of your computer it is almost certainly a request to add the required external power cable that plugs into your HIS R9 290 video cards. Check the video card's manual for the correct power connector, its not a 4 pin.

GPUs are both plugged in with appropriate 8 pin connectors (2 each) from power supply. I am wondering if this is associated with the PCIe 4 pin molex connector. The motherboard documentation indicates that you can provide extra power if you have more than 3 GPUs. I've got 2 plus the native on the mother board. I have also plugged in the 8-pin CPU power. Good suggestions, but no dice. One of my questions is can the peripheral output of the PSU be used to provide the apparent extra power required for the motherboard?

Ok. Think I solved the issue. Plugged peripheral cable into PSU. Verified output with DVM on the pins for the 4-pin molex. Matched voltage suggested on 4-pin molex on the mother board, the one for the PCIe extra power. Plugged in and now working, at least to the boot device screen. Apparently two of the high end cards, even when directly wired to the PSU, still need some extra power. Seems to work, not very good guidance from mother board documentation. Thanks for suggestions. Now just apparently have to work through the software pieces.
