Hello all
I brought my laptop (HP Pavillion dm4 1265dx) in 2011.
Laptop specs:
Intel Core i5-460M
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
RAM: 4 GB, 640 GB ( ST9640320AS)
Graphics Card: Intel GMA HD

Since last 2 days its showing an error 301 related to hard disk (The SMART hard disk check has detected.....) while booting up and also windows error pop ups (Windows detected a hard disk problem).
I went to HP store, the guy told to replace the drive. (System diagonistic fails the test)
I am confused between buying 500gb or 1tb Western Digital.
I don't want to jump from 640gb to 500gb, but my friend and sister insisted to go with 500gb hard disk as I am replacing for a laptop whose processor is 3 year old.
Will buying 1tb hard disk affect performance for an old laptop?
Pls help me to mke an informed decision..I don't want the speed and performance to be compromised. Thank You.

Solution
It won't - the size of the hard drive won't have any effect on the performance of the laptop. The access times and read / write speeds matter though - as a general rule, 7200 rpm drives are faster though 5400 rpm drives are better for battery life. You may also want to go for an SSD as they are lighting fast. Take a look at this table for some benchmarks to compare the hard drives you have found: http://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/

Hi

Look at the Hard drive mouting system

Is the drive in a tray held in place with 4 screws ?
(then drive thickness 7mm, 9, 10mm does not matter as long as not thicker than old drive or available space)

or just jammed in place located mainly by SATA connector
then you want a drive the same thickness as the old drive

modern drives are thinner than 3 year old drives

Whether you go for 500GB or 1000GB (1TB) hard drive depends on how full your old hard drive was and difference in costs between 500 & 1000GB hard drives
