i bought a WD Black series 1Tb HDD about a month or two ago, love the thing, runs fast, big storage, whats to hate? but i was wondering, when i boot up far cry 4, every time an animation starts (ie: the nvidia logo, the game engine animation, ext) it makes a high pitched noise, nothing defining by any means. but when i play the game after it gets to the main menu the noise stops. it doesn't do this in any other game, so i was wondering, what gives?

Hi there newpcgaming,

This very much sounds like the drive is loading up the game. Does this high pitched noise sounds like just a louder HDD's spinning? If so, the drive is most probably fine. Try to run something at least as heavy and demanding as this game.
Apart from that, it will not hurt to test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. The results will provide information on its overall health status.

Are you sure it's the hard drive? My video card gets coil whine in FC4 with the loading screens when the FPS gets really high. Sounds just like your issue.
Update: If you want to test this, just set up a Frame Rate cap using Precision X/Afterburner (assuming you use one of those), if it goes away on the loading screens, that's what it was.

Are you absolutely sure it is your HDD? The reason I'm asking is that some of the recent GeForce cards are known for producing loud high-pitched coil whine in 3D graphic modes. Incidentally, startup screens of Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 are the oft-mentioned examples of the images that produce especially noticeable coil noise. When I heard mine for the first time, I also thought that it was my HDD.
